Mission Statement & ESLRs
It is the mission of Del Mar High School to create an environment in which all students are academically and socially prepared to be successful in higher education, valued members of the workforce and productive members of our society.
As a first step in achieving these goals, it is the commitment of the Del Mar school community to transform the school into an institution that all components of the community take pride in. It is our firm belief that the restoration of pride in Del Mar High School is a critical first step in creating academically and socially successful students.
A second key element to reaching our goals is the belief that all segments of the school community must play a critical role in the process of moving the school forward. To this end, numerous programs have been instituted to engage under-represented students and parents in school activities, scholastic achievement programs, parent education programs and regular parent meetings for Spanish speaking parents. To improve the likelihood that our under-represented students are successful in meeting school goals and achieving their potential, it is critical that these individuals become connected to the school, receive the academic assistance they need, and that their parents learn how to interact with the school as supporters of their children and contributors to the ongoing school improvement process.
The final key element in achieving our goals is the commitment to use data analyze as a means to drive change in our practices and to use research-based tools to guide needed changes. The Del Mar school community believes that ongoing evolutionary change will be critical to our school improvement efforts and that the only true means to assess success and/or failure is by using all of the data available to us. Beginning in the 2004/2005 school year regular assessment of school data, coupled with a coordinated training program in research-based instructional strategies began to drive Del Mar's school improvement efforts. As the staff, students and parents become more adept at analyzing data and designing models of change, the school will begin to make significant steps toward achieving our goals. The commitment and energy is there so the time is now for these efforts to be accelerated.
In preparation for the 2002/2003 WASC visit the staff, coupled with representatives of the student and parent community, engaged in a lengthy process to arrive at the school's ESLRs. Although there has been a significant change in administration and staff over the past two years, the ESLRs are regularly reviewed in light of school data and are the focus of what the Del Mar school community believes students need to know and be able to do upon graduation. Del Mar's ESLRs are below.
ESLR #1: Academically Prepared Individuals who demonstrate proficiency in:
- Reading, Writing and Speaking
- Mathematics
- Use of Technology
ESLR #2: Critical Thinkers who ethically solve problems through:
- Research and fact-finding
- Organization of information
- Analysis and/or interpretation
ESLR #3: Collaborative Workers who:
- Show respect for others
- Utilize good listening skills
- Interact with others in culturally diverse settings
- Function as productive team members
The Del Mar school community recognizes that all students can reach their potential with a strong focus on academic achievement and a solid support system in place to assist students. We also realize that for the ESLRs to have any practical impact on driving school improvement there must be measurable benchmarks. In this regard school Action Plans focus directly on quantifiable benchmarks for improvement.
The Del Mar school community recognizes that the school has a good distance yet to travel to achieve its goals. However, there exists a spirit of optimism that we can achieve what we set out to achieve so long as we continue to work together, stay focused on the course, and continually analyze student achievement data and make adjustments as needed.
