I love to be in school, and I love to teach school. I started teaching because I am passionate about social justice, civic engagement, and teaching students to make sense of the diverse world in which they live. I have been teaching since 2003, and have taught PE, AVID, IB, and AP courses. In the summers, I also work for AVID leading professional development for other teachers. I am not kidding, I seriously LOVE school. I currently teach IB History of the Americas, US History, and AVID/Theory of Knowledge at Del Mar High School.
In May of 2016, I earned my doctorate in Education (EdD) from San Francisco State. My dissertation was the combined impact of AVID and the IB program on student success in college. It was an amazing experience, and guess what? The AVID/IB combo has tremendously positive effects on student post-secondary success. Email me if you would like to talk more about it. I also have a MA in education from UC Santa Cruz, and a BA in History, with a minor in PE, from UC Santa Barbara.
When I am not nerding in a classroom, I love to run, read, watch films (I am a serious film geek), and travel. My favorite time to run is before school, just as the sun is coming up. It is a beautiful and calming time. I have also recently started training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Taking on a new sport is a great reminder of what it feels like to learn. I also love to travel, and have been lucky enough to go to Mexico, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France. I am also fairly obsessed with coffee and my cats.
