Our Del Mar Dons went to the Tahoe Invitational, and they just ran with it!

September 28-30, 2018

The lush backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain range was an added bonus to the 2018 Cross Country Tahoe Invitational and provided a relaxing change from the asphalt and cars that line our regular Del Mar route. The race was a field of some of the most competitive high school runners in the state of California. The boy who won set the course record. Although our team did not place, they had an opportunity to bump elbows with some of the most talented runners in the country. This not only humbles you as a competitor but inspires you to train harder. We learn more from our defeats than our victories, and this was definitely a learning experience.

For some, visiting Tahoe was a "first-time" adventure, and the air and pine trees left them breathless and hungry to explore all the area had to offer.  We toured the Donner Party museum, dipped our toes in the lake, and took advantage of the altitude with an early morning trail run.

There were many memories to be had, and it would not have been possible without the dedicated parents who took precious time out of their busy schedules to bake cookies, buy food, drive, and chaperone the 13 student-athletes who participated in the weekend event. We would also like to thank the Del Mar administration and the board for supporting our mountain curriculum. Field trips make the best classrooms, and we hope to add this one to our syllabus again next year.
