Principal’s Message
Good morning Del Mar family,
For today’s newsletter, we wanted to focus on questions that have come up as of late regarding plagiarism and AI (Artificial Intelligence). I wanted to outline our policy as a school and shed light on when students use AI in their work.
The Del Mar High School Academic Honesty policy can be found HERE on our website. The area I want to focus on today is Plagiarism which is defined as “the representation, intentionally or unintentionally, of the ideas, works, works or work of another person without proper, clear and explicit acknowledgement (ex. Properly citing information).
Below is what will happen to students for the 1st offense:
1st Offense -
-
No credit on assignment/assessment; must re-do assignment/assessment or alternate assignment/assessment
-
Teacher will contact parent/guardian
-
Referral sent to Assistant Principals
-
The Assistant Principal will enter the infraction in the discipline database.
-
Student will be placed on an Academic Integrity Contract and a copy will be given to the student and parent/guardian
I bring this up because as our use of AI continues to advance, concerns over how AI is used in student work continues to be a growing concern. I wanted to share the statement that IB recently put out with regards to AI. I want to draw attention to the following: “the software must be credited in the body of the text and appropriately referenced in the bibliography”. This means that it is our expectation that any AI use for schoolwork should be documented and cited. Please remember that any essay or body of work that is mainly made of quotes will likely not receive a passing grade.
We will continue to monitor the new developments with AI both as a site and as a district. We will also continue to communicate changes and updates with our entire school community.
Welcome and Introduction:
We will need a member of the administration to login to the English session and do a brief welcome (1-2 minutes) and then you can introduce us, and we will take it from there. Then, login to the Spanish session and do the same: a brief welcome, introduce us, and we will take it from there. Let me know if you are going to be present or inform me of the person that will be there.
Below, you will find the zoom information.
