English Language Development (ELD) Courses
Del Mar High School offers the following English Language Development courses*.

ELD - English I
|
| Grade 9; A-G Requirement - English 10 Credits, Elective 10 Credits; UC/CSU Designation - None |

In this multi-period ELD Language Arts course, students at the beginning level of English learn to communicate about a range of topics and academic content areas through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that target high-level thinking with appropriate support. Students are provided interactive and collaborative opportunities to express their own ideas as well as to question, interpret and evaluate the ideas of others.

As students progress to an intermediate level in English language proficiency, they move towards using the English language in more complex, cognitively demanding situations. In this multi-period ELD Language Arts course, students will further learn and communicate about a range of topics and academic content areas through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that target high-level thinking with appropriate support. Through interactive instruction students are provided opportunities to express their own ideas as well as to question, interpret, and evaluate the ideas of others.
Prerequisite: ELD 1 or placement at the early/intermediate level.

In this two period ELD Language Arts course, students nearing reasonable fluency in English will use the language in more complex, cognitively demanding situations with increasing independence. ELD 3 prepares students to learn and communicate about a range of topics and academic content areas through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities that target high-level thinking with appropriate support. Students are provided with interactive instruction and activities, a print-rich environment, and public speaking experiences in order to prepare students for mainstream English and other content classes.
Prerequisite: ELD II or placement at the intermediate/early advanced level.

This is a one year course designed to offer support to students enrolled in an on-level English course to support student success. The course will also prepare students for the rigorous demands of the Common Core Standards by focusing on critical reading, academic writing, and presentation skills and strategies.

Blanca Diaz is the Community Liaison at Del Mar. As our Community Liaison, Blanca works with students, parents, Del Mar staff, and Community Groups by:
1) Coordinating Padres Unidos - a Spanish Speaking Parent Participation Program at Del Mar dedicated to providing the tools parents need to actively participate and help their students to strive during high school and beyond.
2) Facilitates Del Mar's ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) meetings and promotes the participation of parents of our diverse population.
3) Advises the LEO Club (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) - a student club on campus whose mission is to provide voluntary service to our community, while developing leadership skills.

Tengo el placer de ser el Enlace Comunitario en Del Mar y el privilegio de trabajar con los estudiantes, padres, personal docente de Del Mar y Recursos Comunitarios.
1) Soy la coordinadora de Padres Unidos, el cual es un Programa de Participación para Padres de Familia de habla Hispana, dedicado a proveer las herramientas necesarias para que los padres puedan participar activamente y ayudar a sus estudiantes a tener éxito durante la preparatoria y mas allá.
2) Además, contribuyo durante las reuniones de ELAC promoviendo la participación de padres de nuestra diversa población.
3) Tambien formo parte del Club de LEO, cuyo cometido es prestar servicio voluntario a nuestra comunidad mientras desarrollamos habilidades de liderazgo.
