Del Mar offers the following Physical Education and MCJROTC Courses*

Physical Education & sports/Marching Band PE
Physical Education 9: Course 1
Grade 9-12; A-G Requirement - Physical Education**; UC/CSU Designation - None

This course includes movement patterns and skills related to individual and dual sport activities, rhythms/dance and aquatics as addressed in California State Standards for Physical Education Course 1 and California Education Code.  All classes are conducted in a co-educational, inclusive manner.  Emphasis is placed on dynamic warm up routines aimed at improving coordination, balance, speed, endurance and reaction time, in addition to cardiovascular endurance activities.  Principles of biomechanics, the five components of fitness and the Fitnessgram physical fitness test will be included.  A comprehensive health unit is also included as part of this course curriculum.

** Completion of 20 units of physical education is necessary to graduate.

Physical Education 11-12: Course 2
Grade 11-12; A-G Requirement - General Elective; UC/CSU Designation - None

This course includes movement patterns and skills related to team sports, gymnastics and tumbling, and combative sports as addressed in California State Standards for Physical Education Course 2 and California Education Code.  All classes are conducted in a co-educational, inclusive manner.  Students are tasked with assessing current physical fitness levels and challenged to enhance their fitness levels through personal goals aimed at improving each area of the five components of health related physical fitness.  Additionally, there is an emphasis on teamwork strategies including group dynamics, self-responsibility and social interaction.

Sports/Marching Band PE
Grade 9-12; A-G Requirement - Physical Education; UC/CSU Designation - None

Sports/Marching Band PE allows student athletes to earn PE credits through participation in school sponsored sports and/or Marching Band.  Coaches/Band Directors evaluate candidates on three criteria (attendance, work ethic and sportsmanship) to help determine an overall grade recommendation. Final grades are assigned by PE DC.  Students can earn 2.5 credits per season, up to 5 credits max per school year.  Students must pass the Physical Fitness Tests (4 out of 5) in the 9th grade, maintain a 2.0 GPA during each season of participation and finish the season in good standing to be eligible to earn credit.

Prerequisites:

  • Participation and satisfactory completion of Marching Band in 9th grade.
  • Students must take and successfully pass a freshmen PE class earning a 2.0 GPA or higher and pass 5 out of 6 standards of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
MCJROTC (Marine Corps Junior ROTC)

MCJROTC is a four-year program that is offered as an alternative to PE class. It gives students who do not want to join the military an appreciation for military leadership, while giving those who chose to join, an advantage over their peers. Learn more about Del Mar's MCJROTC Program.

Military Science I
Grade 9-12; A-G Requirement - Physical Education; UC/CSU Designation - None

This is the first course in the Military Science program. This course develops leadership skills, self-discipline, teamwork, individual initiative, citizenship, and respect for our government and country.

Military Science II
Grade 10-12; A-G Requirement - Physical Education; UC/CSU Designation - None

Military Science II includes the effects of physical activity upon dynamic health, mechanics of body movement, aquatics, gymnastics and tumbling, individual and dual sports, rhythms and dance, team sports, and combative skills.

Prerequisite: Military Science I

Military Science III
Grade 10-12; A-G Requirement - Physical Education; UC/CSU Designation - None

Military Science III cadets begin to use their leadership training as they assume positions of increased authority and responsibility within the Del Mar High School program. Detailed instruction on personal finances is presented, as well as other preparation for life beyond high school.

Prerequisite: Military Science II

Military Science IV
Grade 10-12; A-G Requirement - Physical Education; UC/CSU Designation - None

Cadets continue to use their leadership training as they assume positions of increased authority and responsibility within Del Mar High School. This final year focuses on battalion management, mentoring junior cadets, and finalizing post-secondary career or military plans.

Prerequisite: Military Science III
